A groundbreaking plan is underway in Yellowstone National Park that will use AI-powered devices to track and protect endangered wolf populations. These phone-sized devices, known as GrizCams and developed by Montana-based startup Grizzly Systems, leverage artificial intelligence to monitor wolf activity, according to NVIDIA.
Innovative technology strengthens conservation efforts.
GrizCams are deployed throughout the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem to capture audio and video data of wolf howls. This data is then analyzed by AI models, specifically a convolutional neural network that converts the audio into a spectrogram to identify various aspects of wolf vocalizations and geographic origin. AI models are trained using NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPUs in the Azure cloud using the PyTorch framework and NVIDIA CUDA-X libraries.
Far-reaching implications for wildlife management
Jeff Reed, CEO of Grizzly Systems, emphasized the device’s ability to consistently cover large areas while addressing resource constraints facing wildlife managers. AI technology helps map territory boundaries by identifying the different pitches and intonations of wolf howls that travel over 6km. The current model is not yet able to identify individual wolves, but future developments aim to achieve this.
GrizCams plays an important role in a broader conservation strategy, balancing the needs of local wolf populations, the Yellowstone ecotourism industry, and ranchers protecting their livestock. By tracking wolf movements, conservationists can devise strategies to prevent attacks on livestock, such as using acoustic deterrents to draw wolves away from ranches.
Expanding the application of AI in conservation
In addition to wolf conservation, GrizCams’ AI technology has potential applications in a variety of industry sectors. The device’s robustness and battery efficiency make it ideal for monitoring remote infrastructure such as oil rigs and electrical transformers, which are often targets of saboteurs.
Reed highlighted the broad environmental benefits of AI, which could help combat illegal activities such as poaching and wildlife trafficking. AI technology supports conservationists protecting endangered species and their habitats by enhancing our ability to monitor vast and remote areas.
The collaboration between Grizzly Systems and conservationists continues to evolve, and there are plans to expand the use of this technology to other conservation efforts. This initiative demonstrates the potential of AI to transform wildlife management and conservation strategies globally.
