I reviewed Deep Rush by Kalamba in July last year. This was the first time I really liked a Crash game. It was suspenseful, surprising, and beautifully portrayed. It took the simple mechanics of the genre and paired them with themes that drew me in and kept me coming back for more.
With Smash X, SmartSoft Gaming attempted something similarly subversive with their clash game.
Did you miss your chance?
The game was clearly designed with mobile players in mind. This means your desktop experience is not optimal. Actually, I’m a little disappointed. The darkness on the left and right appears to be in the process of consuming a small piece of the game in the center. I think it was a truly missed opportunity. In darkness, overhead lights may suddenly flicker to reveal something. It could be a remembrance of the Bulldogs’ boxing past, or it could be the sight of an admiring audience member. This would have really helped build a narrative that would have increased the game’s appeal.

Smash X doesn’t do a very good job when it comes to themes. Boxing bulldogs are fun. However, in my opinion, SmartSoft has missed out on replacing Boxer. Then there’s the gold chest built into the brick floor that looks like it was ripped straight out of a Mario game. I really don’t know if this is an easter egg or if the reference was unintentional. Either way, it left me a little confused.
Light at the end of the tunnel?
I really like bulldogs. I think this game has a really interesting style implemented that suits the arcade feel of the game. But he looks a little sad. I also liked the action. The way the boxing bulldog moves is very reminiscent of old school street fighters. This is once again reflected in the arcade theme this slot seems to have going on.

SmartSoft Gaming is releasing some amazing titles right now. Foxy Hot 20 slot was released around the same time as Smash X and is by far my favorite game of the year. The provider recently released another Crash-style game called Mine Island. In this game, you jump over kangaroos along a rocky path. This game is incredibly charming and it hooked me. Now that I think about it, I don’t think SmashX was this company’s best work. But I still believe there are great games out there. I would like to see Smash X 2 or Smash Double X.
