TON, a decentralized network that benefited significantly from its close relationship with the platform, was the most affected, as evidenced by the repercussions across the community and a 20% plunge in its native token.
The TON community took a firm stance and took action in response to this situation.
TON, with Durov from Telegram
TON, The Open Network, originally developed by Telegram before its ownership changed in 2020 due to regulatory issues, announced its support for Panel Durov after his arrest. In an official statement on August 25, 2024, the group said it was working on ‘#digitalresistance‘ and ‘#FREEDUROV’ campaign, urging community members to advocate for the CEO’s release.
As part of this campaign, the TON community began a widespread change of profile pictures across the community to a dog-themed mascot symbolizing the “digital resistance” movement. The campaign was started by Durov during a similar legal battle with the Russian government in 2020.
TON’s defense follows previous statements that assured users of its strong position despite ongoing uncertainty surrounding Durov’s arrest. The company insisted that the community is fully operational and has expressed support for its executives.
“As a community committed to freedom of speech and decentralization, we stand firmly by Pavel during this challenging time,” stated the network.

“This is ridiculous”: Telegram CEO defends himself
On the same day, the company defended Durov’s arrest through social media platform X. Telegram described the arrest as unfounded, stressing that its operations are compliant with European Union regulations, including the Digital Services Act.
Telegram has dismissed the claims about uncensored content and its alleged links to illegal activity, and has argued that it is unreasonable to hold Durov responsible for misuse of the platform.
“It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform,” the statement read.
Telegram further emphasized its ongoing regulation aimed at solving the problem and expressed solidarity with its users.
