  • Lara & Tiffany Trump’s X Account Falls Victim of Fake Meme Coin Hack
  • Donald Trump’s son Eric has issued a warning message.
  • World Liberty Token is supported by popular social influencers.

This year, crypto hacks promoting fake tokens have become a dangerous trend on X. These scams, which typically target celebrities such as musicians, athletes, and politicians, involve people impersonating the celebrity victims and offering fake coins.

On September 3, 2024, cybercriminals hijacked Tiffany and Lara Trump’s X account. The compromised account shared messages about Donald Trump’s new decentralized finance business, World Liberty Financial.

However, this so-called World Liberty token was actually a fake meme coin launched by Solana (SOL). In a now-deleted tweet from Lara Trump’s account, the smart contract address for the fake token was shared by one of the “only official channels” associated with World Liberty. “I believe my father and brother are doing the important work that has long been needed to decentralize the world of finance,” the now-deleted message reads.

Trump family joins in warning fans

After several tweets from the Lara Trump account, hackers supported the fake $WL tokens through Tiffany’s X account. Tiffany’s message supported Lara’s announcement in a sly attempt to create legitimacy for the fake meme coin.

Hours later, Eric Trump, Lara Trump’s husband, warned the X audience that all messages from Lara and Tiffany’s accounts were fake. Eric also praised X’s customer support team for resolving the issue in a matter of minutes and urged Trump fans not to fall for this scam.

I do not speak for them or their project. I put 3 clapping emojis and deleted them a few minutes after hearing about the hack (immediately!) and posted a hack notice on the official channel. https://t.co/Y5SvibjqGg

Unfortunately, Solana’s fake $WL tokens caught the immediate attention of the Trump family’s followers, as several crypto enthusiasts on X noted. They confirmed that “people immediately jumped on it,” especially after social influencer Caitlyn Jenner endorsed the fake $WL tokens to her 3.3 million followers.

On the other side

  • Some believe this is an inside job, as Donald Trump’s official X account previously shared the same website.
  • Although Team X was able to resolve the issue smoothly, it is unknown how much damage was caused by the incident.

Why this matters

As hacking incidents targeting celebrities increase, it is important to understand the mechanisms of these cybercrimes and the importance of accountability for those who are affected.
