Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin converted $1.6 million worth of Memcoins into ether (ETH), which he had previously pledged to donate to charity.
The sale included $982,800 worth of Moo Deng (MOODENG), $231,000 of Monsterra (MSTR), and $183,000 of ETHEREUM IS GOOD (EBULL), blockchain analytics firm Spot On Chain noted in an X post on October 13. I did it.
Buterin also sold stakes in Popcat (POPCAT), Fwog (FWOG) and Vitalek Buteren (VITALIK).
He has currently converted $2.78 million worth of MEMCOIN to Ethereum and donated $884,000 worth of it to charity over the past nine days, Spot On Chain revealed on October 13.
Buterin praised memecoin issuers who sent coins to donate, but suggested people consider donating directly instead.
Buterin announced through X Post on October 7 that he would donate all 10 billion MEMCOIN tokens he received to an organization researching aviation disease prevention technology.
On August 15, Buterin donated all of the animal-themed meme coins he had received over the past 12 months to the Effective Altruism Funds’ animal welfare fund.
More donations may come from Buterin.
According to data from Spot On Chain, his $700 million cryptocurrency portfolio still consists of $2.4 million of MOODENG tokens, $144,000 of Neiro (NEIRO), $117,000 of MSTR, and $80,000 of Degen (DEGEN).
Buterin has long argued that memecoins could contribute positively to society by funding important public projects or even helping people in low-income countries earn a living.
Meanwhile, Buterin criticized celebrity-themed memecoins as intended to enrich celebrities and early investors.

Buterin’s name was recently mentioned by economists Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok as a possible candidate for the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics.
“Vitalik built the platform, created the currency, and along the way clearly followed in Satoshi’s footsteps and refuted Mises’ regression theorem, but my God, what does it take for someone to win a Nobel Prize?” Cowen said. From the October 8 episode of the duo’s Marginal Revolution podcast.
Tabarrok expressed his agreement, adding, “Moreover, Vitalik has continued to contribute to the design of Ethereum’s mechanisms through proof-of-stake.”
