Following the DAO grant and testing of other game engines by the protocol team, Decentraland will soon be available on more platforms. This will help strengthen your future foundation and foster business-driven creativity.

As 2024 approaches, the primary goal of distributed foundations is to deliver new, powerful desktop customers that are uniformly designed. This will increase the odds while also paving the way for Decentraland to grow on alternative platforms such as mobile and VR.

Decentraland is an open-source, decentralized, and community-oriented platform that provides everyone with the ability to contribute to the general development of a virtual social global platform. To achieve this capability, the protocol team plans to build decentralized explorers on complementary technology stacks and provide new growth opportunities.

After comprehensive research on various alternative engines, the protocol team decided to build decentralized mobile customers on Godot, an open source engine, and desktop customers on Bevy, another open source engine. Decentraland is well-positioned for the future thanks to its open protocol and the new Unity desktop client built by the foundation. There are also a ton of engines that can power your Explorer for the long haul.

Initially, Decentraland used the Three.js Java Script 3D library to render virtual environments. In 2018, the project transitioned to Babylon.js, and ultimately the development team settled on Unity.

The open protocol allows Decentralized Land to operate on a variety of technology platforms. The Protocol team already has Unity-oriented customers and research has been conducted on two alternative engines. They were called Babylon.js and Bevu.js.

The Babylon stage was shut down after a proper proof of concept, and the team moved to Godot. From the beginning, the team integrated Bevy’s Rust programming language into the Godot project. The Godot Engine offered interesting alternatives for interacting with Decentraland, including compatibility with all available mixed reality headsets.

With the release of Godot’s editor code, there is the possibility to improve all aspects of the engine. SDK 7 may also include the Decentraland editor.

Once your new Explorer is set up, you should review the benefits of having more than one consumer. The team’s research is primarily experimental in nature. For the time being, Unity is the default engine, and the foundation is looking for production-ready customers.

The next step for the protocol team is to improve Web3 exposure so that players can be identified but still connected without using an external wallet.

Explorer beta releases for both mobile and desktop could arrive in mid-2024.
