  • Liberland, located near Europe’s second largest river, gets a new PM.
  • Voting is organized solely on the blockchain, erasing the chance of human error.
  • Liberland’s president offered local cryptocurrency to those helping with construction.

TRON founder and entrepreneur Justin Sun is much more than just a cryptocurrency persona. But his latest actions have surprised fans and haters alike. The owner of HTX was officially declared Prime Minister of the Liberland.

Sun emerges as PM in conflict-torn crypto nation

The Riverland, an unrecognized micro-state near the Danube River, lies in one of the most conflict-affected regions of the Balkan Peninsula. Croatia and Serbia have contested territories, and the neighbors have a long history of conflict over the former Yugoslavia.

However, the micro-state, which has not yet been recognized by any state, uses an innovative blockchain-based voting system. “This system has the unique ability to eliminate doubt about election results, a challenge facing many countries that still rely on traditional methods.” Presents official documents of the Riverlands Council.

Sun Yat-sen was nominated as Prime Minister in a pilot parliamentary election, and three “solid Libertarians” were re-elected to serve in parliament. According to data from the first quarter of 2024, Liberan has reached 1,200 registered citizens eligible to vote in this election.

Starting in 2015, Czech politician Vít Jedlička began laying claim to floodplain territory near the Danube River in a crusade to create a state free from external economic interference, minimal government intervention, and a fully cryptocurrency-based local economy.

Liberland was consequently established in 2015, and since then it has received more than 735,000 requests for citizenship. existing Liberlander People paid up to $10,000 to obtain citizenship.

Despite its ambiguous legal status, Riverland has received media attention and even offered free citizenship and local cryptocurrency to new residents who stayed for at least a week. Czech classical liberal politicians based their territorial claims on the ‘principle of no-frills’, which holds that areas smaller than three miles do not infringe on the sovereignty of Croatia or Serbia.

On the flip side

  • According to multiple reports, Croatian authorities treated the Riverlanders as infiltrators.
  • Because no country on Earth recognizes Liberand, its citizens are often caught in the crossfire.

Why This Matters

This is the first example of blockchain technology supporting a government voting process, and potentially other countries will soon be testing this method as well.
