Why OP Stack Chain Uses Agglayer Over Superchain: Polygon CEO

  • Polygon (POL) Labs CEO Marc Boiron argued why OP Stack Chains is integrating with AggLayer.
  • Boiron’s arguments range from cost to sovereignty.
  • Polygon heads have repeatedly suggested that the OP stack chain will come to AggLayer.

As it pursues expansion, Ethereum’s roadmap has become increasingly rollup-centric, leading to the emergence of multiple layer 2 chains. But the Layer 2 boom did not come without costs or challenges. One of these concerns is fragmentation, which has led competing Layer 2 solution providers to propose interoperability solutions.

While interoperability solutions developed by most layer 2 stack providers are limited to stack users, Polygon (POL) has taken a different approach. Working with several industry leaders such as Espresso, Gateway.fm, NEAR, and Succinct Labs, Polygon (POL) Labs is developing a solution called AggLayer that can connect all of Web3 on Ethereum.

Recently, Polygon (POL) Labs CEO Marc Boiron explained why users of Optimism’s technology stack, perhaps its biggest competitor, connect to AggLayer instead of connecting to Superchain, Optimism’s federated chain network.

The “obvious” choice?

Polygon (POL) Labs CEO Marc Boiron made the case for why OP Stack Chains wants to connect to AggLayer instead of Superchain. “Honestly, I think it’s pretty obvious,” the Polygon (POL) Labs chief claimed, explaining his reasoning in an X post on Monday, October 14th.

First of all, Boiron emphasized that unlike Superchain, AggLayer Chains does not require you to pay to use the technology as part of your revenue. At the same time, the Polygon Labs leader emphasized that the AggLayer chain can be connected to chains beyond the Ethereum ecosystem. Boiron also noted that unlike Superchain, where participants must adhere to the laws of the chain, the AggLayer chain retains complete sovereignty, allowing them to manage the chain however they wish.

I think it’s frankly obvious.

If you choose the OP stack with Superchain, you can:
– Pay huge sums of money (5% of revenue or 15% of profits) to governance over which you have no control.
– Limit the technologies that can be used to those allowed by the superchain.
– By consenting you lose your sovereignty…

In addition to this, the head of Polygon (POL) noted that AggLayer’s reliance on zero-knowledge technology makes it more future-oriented.

Boiron’s latest statement comes as he has repeatedly suggested that the OP Stack chain will be connected to AggLayer.

OP Is stack chain provided in AggLayer?

“The OP Stack chain will be connected to AggLayer, showing that superchain chains can also be connected,” the Polygon (POL) Labs lead first claimed on August 19.

Boiron reiterated this view on Monday 14 October, insisting this would happen “soon”. Polygon leaders refrained from specifying which OP stack chains will join AggLayer, but hinted that at least one will do so.

In April 2024, mobile-focused layer 1 blockchain Celo disclosed that it had chosen Optimism’s OP stack over Polygon’s CDK and Matter Labs’ ZK stack for its layer 2 transition. Nonetheless, Celo suggested that it wants interoperability with other technology stacks, highlighting that this could be possible by integrating Polygon’s Type 1 prover, which any chain can utilize with minimal code modifications to connect to the AggLayer.

On the flip side

  • It is not yet known if and when optimistic rollups will be attached to the AggLayer.
  • Some key features of AggLayer are not yet released.

Why This Matters

Fragmentation has emerged as a major UX challenge for Ethereum Layer 2 chains. AggLayer is working to solve this problem on Ethereum and the entire Web3 space, which could be a significant advantage for POL.
