In a groundbreaking session at NVIDIA GTC 2024, experts discussed how AI-powered flood modeling and 3D visualization tools are transforming community preparedness for climate risks. RSS-Hydro’s Guy Schumann and Guillaume Gallion demonstrated innovative geospatial applications and high-fidelity visualizations designed to strengthen disaster resilience through improved decision-making, public education, and responder training, according to NVIDIA.
Advanced AI platform for accurate flood mapping
The FloodSENS platform was highlighted as a key technological advancement. This machine learning-based tool uses a U-Net model trained with optical satellite data to produce highly accurate flood maps even under challenging conditions such as cloud cover. FloodSENS integrates auxiliary datasets such as digital elevation models and water flow grids and runs on NVIDIA T4 and L4 Tensor Core GPUs, showing consistent results across regions such as Pakistan, Spain, and Sudan.
Immersive 3D visualization
NVIDIA Omniverse is highlighted for its role in creating advanced 3D visualizations. These models help decision makers better understand flooding patterns and visualize the impacts of extreme weather events, helping them prepare for more effective disasters. The immersive nature of these visualizations provides a comprehensive view of potential impacts, improving strategic planning and communication.
AI-based hydraulic model
An advanced hydraulic model capable of simulating river and sewage flooding is also presented. These models incorporate land features such as terrain and urban layout and support ultra-high-resolution simulations at both urban and regional scales when run on high-performance computing systems such as MeluXina with NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPUs.
Real-world applications and learning
The session also explored how to successfully implement these technologies in collaboration with partners such as Microsoft Azure, the UN World Food Program, and the ESA HeManEO program. Participants gained insights into data-driven flood assessments, the benefits of 3D visualization for decision support, and the role of AI in improving flood forecasting and real-time response strategies.
